The history of what modern day fans now now as sevens rugby dates back to the 19th century when a Scottish butcher incorporated a rugby tournament into a sports day. So in Melrose Scotland in 1883, seven clubs took side in the seven-a-side tournament, with the time of each match limited to 15 minutes. The tournament was an instant hit with the public and about 1,600 tickets were sold on the day.The popularity of Sevens Rugby has continued to grow apace since the tournament in Melrose. It is worth noting, though, that the idea of a sevens tournament is not the only legacy of the Melrose butcher and his apprentice. Today, the World Sevens Series still follows the rule that the first team to score in extra time is the winner of the match.
The IRB Sevens World Series, known officially as the IRB Sevens before the 2006-07 season and also sometimes called the World Sevens Series, is a series of international tournaments organised for the first time in the 1999-2000 season. Teams compete for the Sevens World Series title by accumulating points based on their finishing position in each tournament. Each season's circuit currently consists of eight tournaments in seven countries.
